Overview
An implant-retained denture, or overdenture, is a removable denture that clips onto a small number of implants. The implants hold it firmly so it does not slip or rock as much as an ordinary denture.
You take it out at home to clean it and to sleep. It is a popular choice for people who struggle with loose lower dentures and want more comfort and confidence when eating and speaking.
What to know
- A denture that clips onto implants
- Holds far more firmly than a standard denture
- Still removable for cleaning
- Often uses two or more implants
- Helps with loose or rocking lower dentures
Common questions
How is it different from Teeth on Implants (All-on-X)?
An overdenture clips on and you take it out to clean. Teeth on implants are fixed and stay in your mouth at all times.
How many implants are needed?
Often two or more, depending on the jaw. The lower jaw commonly uses two implants to hold the denture.
Will it still move when I eat?
It holds much more firmly than a normal denture, though it is not as solid as a fixed bridge. Most people find eating far easier.
Do I take it out at night?
Yes, it is usually removed at night and to clean. This lets your gums rest and keeps the denture and clips clean.
Can my current denture be converted?
Sometimes an existing denture can be adapted to clip onto implants, but often a new one gives the best fit. Your dentist will advise.
