Overview
The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves that trap food and are hard to clean. A sealant fills these grooves with a thin protective layer.
Sealants are quick, painless and need no drilling. They are most useful soon after the adult back teeth come through.

Common questions
Do sealants hurt?
No. The tooth is cleaned, the coating is painted on and set with a light.
How long do they last?
Often several years. Your dentist checks them at each visit and tops them up if needed.
Which teeth get sealed?
Usually the adult back molars, soon after they come through.
Do sealants replace brushing?
No. Your child still needs to brush, floss and visit the dentist.
