Overview
Inlays and onlays are made in a laboratory or in the clinic and then bonded into a prepared tooth. They suit larger cavities where a standard filling might be weak.
An inlay sits within the biting surface, while an onlay also covers one or more of the cusps. Both restore strength while keeping more of your tooth than a full crown.
What to know
- A stronger option for larger cavities
- Keeps more tooth than a full crown
- Custom-made, then bonded into place
- Made from porcelain, ceramic or gold
Common questions
How is this different from a normal filling?
It is made outside the mouth for a precise fit and is usually stronger than a direct filling.
Inlay or onlay, what is the difference?
An inlay fits within the tooth; an onlay also covers one or more raised points.
Will it match my tooth?
Ceramic and porcelain options are colour-matched to look natural.
Do I need a temporary one?
If made in a laboratory, a temporary may protect the tooth between visits.
How long do they last?
Well-bonded inlays and onlays often last many years with good care.
