Overview

Peri-implantitis is inflammation and infection of the gum and bone around a dental implant. It is similar to gum disease around natural teeth, and if left untreated it can cause the bone to shrink and the implant to loosen.

It is usually caused by a build-up of plaque around the implant. Early signs include red, swollen or bleeding gums. Good daily cleaning and regular check-ups are the best way to prevent it.

What to know

  • Infection of the gum and bone around an implant
  • Can cause bone loss and a loose implant
  • Often starts with red or bleeding gums
  • Caused mainly by plaque build-up
  • Easier to treat when caught early

Common questions

What causes peri-implantitis?
It is mainly caused by plaque building up around the implant. Smoking and a history of gum disease raise the risk.
What are the warning signs?
Red, swollen or bleeding gums around the implant, soreness, or an implant that feels loose. Tell your dentist if you notice any of these.
Can it be treated?
Yes, especially when caught early. Treatment includes thorough cleaning around the implant, and sometimes surgery if bone has been lost.
Could I lose the implant?
If the infection is severe and bone is badly damaged, the implant may fail. Early treatment greatly improves the chances of saving it.
How do I prevent it?
Clean around your implants every day, do not smoke, and keep your regular maintenance visits so problems are caught early.
