Overview

Zirconia implants are made from a strong white ceramic instead of titanium. They work in the same way, replacing a tooth root so a crown can be attached, and the bone heals around them over several months.

Some people choose them because they are metal-free and the white colour can help where gums are thin. They are a newer option, so there is less long-term research than for titanium, and not every case is suitable.

What to know

  • Made from white ceramic, not metal
  • A metal-free alternative to titanium
  • Work much like titanium implants
  • May suit thin gums where colour shows
  • Less long-term evidence than titanium

Common questions

Why choose zirconia over titanium?
Some people prefer a metal-free option, and the white colour can be helpful where gums are thin and a grey tint might show.
Are they as strong as titanium?
Modern zirconia is strong, but titanium has a longer track record. Your dentist will advise whether zirconia suits your case.
Is the procedure different?
Placement is similar and done under local anaesthetic. The bone still needs several months to heal around the implant.
Are they suitable for everyone?
No. They are not ideal for every situation, and the design options can be more limited. We will assess whether they fit your needs.
Do they look more natural?
The white material can help avoid a grey shadow at the gumline, which some people find looks more natural.
