Overview
A denture needs daily cleaning just like natural teeth, but it is looked after differently. Good care helps prevent stains, odour and gum irritation.
Handling your denture gently and storing it correctly also helps it last and keeps your mouth healthy.
What to know
- Clean your denture over water to avoid breakage
- Use a denture brush, not regular toothpaste
- Take it out at night to rest your gums
- See your dentist if it rubs or feels loose
Caring for it
- Rinse your denture after meals to remove loose food.
- Brush it twice a day with a denture brush and mild soap or denture cleaner.
- Hold it over a basin of water or a towel so it does not break if dropped.
- Avoid regular toothpaste, as it can scratch the surface over time.
- Take your denture out overnight and store it in clean water.
- Clean your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth each day.
- Avoid very hot water, which can warp the denture.
- Visit your dentist if it becomes loose, rubs or you notice sore spots.
Common questions
Can I use regular toothpaste on my denture?
It is best avoided, as it is too abrasive and can scratch the surface.
Why soak the denture overnight?
Soaking keeps it moist so it does not dry out and change shape.
How often should I see the dentist?
Regular check-ups let your dentist review the fit and check your gums.
What if my denture starts to smell?
Daily cleaning usually prevents odour; a denture cleaner can help if it lingers.
Can I leave my denture in all the time?
Resting your gums overnight is usually healthier, unless your dentist advises otherwise.
