Overview

Over time gums change shape, so a denture can become loose or rub. A reline adds new material to the fitting surface so it sits snugly against your gums again.

Dentures can also crack, break or lose a tooth. Many of these can be repaired, often quite quickly, rather than replaced.

What to know

  • Relining improves a loose or rubbing denture
  • Repairs fix cracks, breaks or lost teeth
  • Often quicker than making a new denture
  • Helps comfort, chewing and stability

Common questions

How do I know I need a reline?
If your denture feels loose, rocks or rubs, a reline may help it fit again.
Should I glue a broken denture myself?
No, home glues can warp it; bring it in so it can be repaired properly.
How long does a repair take?
Simple repairs are often done the same day, though some are sent to a laboratory.
Can every denture be relined?
Most can, but a very old or worn denture may be better replaced.
Will a reline last forever?
No, gums keep changing, so further relines or a new denture may be needed in time.
