Overview

An immediate denture is made in advance and placed straight after your teeth are taken out. This means you do not have to go without teeth while your gums heal.

Because gums shrink as they heal, the fit changes over the first few months. A reline or a new denture is usually needed once healing is complete.

What to know

  • Fitted the same day your teeth are removed
  • Avoids being seen without teeth
  • Acts like a bandage over the healing gums
  • Will need relining as the gums shrink

Common questions

Why does the fit change so much?
Gums and bone shrink as they heal, so the denture gradually becomes looser.
When will I need a reline?
Often a few months after the teeth are out, once healing has settled.
Will it be sore at first?
Some tenderness is normal early on, and your dentist can adjust sore spots.
Can I try the denture before my teeth come out?
No, because the front teeth are still present, but it is made to match your records.
Is this an extra cost on top of a normal denture?
A reline or replacement later is usually a separate step; your dentist will explain.
