Overview
A check-up and clean is the simplest way to keep your mouth healthy. Your dentist looks for early signs of decay, gum disease and other problems while they are still small and easy to treat.
The clean removes hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing cannot shift. Catching things early usually means simpler, more comfortable care later on.
What to know
- Finds small problems before they become painful or costly
- Removes tartar that brushing and flossing cannot
- Often recommended every six to twelve months
- Includes a check of your gums, teeth and soft tissues
Common questions
How often should I come in?
Many people visit every six to twelve months, but your dentist will suggest what suits you.
Will the clean hurt?
It is usually painless. Tell your dentist if your teeth feel sensitive.
Do I still need X-rays?
Sometimes. X-rays show decay and bone that we cannot see by looking alone.
What if a problem is found?
Your dentist will explain it clearly and talk through your options before anything is done.
