Overview
An implant-supported bridge replaces several missing teeth in a row using two or more implants. The implants act as anchors, and a set of joined teeth spans the gap between them.
It is useful when more than one tooth is missing but a full arch of teeth is not needed. Because it rests on implants, it does not depend on your natural teeth for support.
What to know
- Replaces several missing teeth in a row
- Anchored by two or more implants
- Does not rely on natural teeth for support
- Fixed in place, not removable at home
- Needs daily cleaning under the bridge
Common questions
How many implants will I need?
Usually two or more, depending on how many teeth are missing and the bone available. Your dentist will plan this from your scans.
How is it different from an implant crown?
A crown replaces one tooth on one implant. A bridge replaces several joined teeth supported by more than one implant.
Is it fixed or removable?
It is fixed onto the implants and stays in your mouth. Only your dentist can take it off.
How do I clean under it?
You clean beneath the bridge each day with a small interdental brush, and a water flosser works well too. We avoid floss around implant-supported teeth, as it can damage the gum's seal to the restoration. We will show you the easiest way.
What if I do not have enough bone?
A bone graft or sinus lift may be done first to build up the area before the implants are placed.
